At Akadia Training, we pride ourselves on delivering educational programs that transform lives and address critical community needs. With funding from the Queensland Government “Set for Success” pilot program, our latest initiative embodies this mission by providing tailored support for learners in the Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability) Supported Stream. This program is not just another vocational course—it’s a lifeline for those seeking to build meaningful careers in aged care and disability support.
Bridging the Gap for Aspiring Care Workers
The demand for skilled workers in the individual support sector is growing, especially in regions like Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. Yet, many individuals face barriers that hinder their access to training and employment. People from Non-English-speaking backgrounds, mature-aged learners, and those with limited literacy often struggle to complete traditional training programs. Akadia’s “Set for Success” project aims to remove these barriers.
This initiative integrates adult language and literacy support into the Certificate III in Individual Support, creating a “supported stream” designed to help 24 students over the next year. By enhancing essential skills in a contextualized, supportive environment, participants will not only achieve their qualifications but also gain the confidence to excel in the workplace.
A Tailored Approach to Learning
The program begins with a preparation course, focusing on:
- Digital Literacy: Navigating the digital tools essential in today’s workplaces.
- Numeracy Skills: Addressing the math skills required for daily tasks in care roles.
- Industry-Specific English: Learning the language of the care sector.
- Study and Workplace Skills: Preparing for academic and professional success.
With 15–20 hours of flexible learning per week, including online and in-person sessions, students can manage their studies alongside other commitments.
Key support strategies include:
- One-on-one tutoring
- Tailored workshops
- Access to laptops loaded with industry-specific software
- Regular progress assessments and career mentoring
Practical Training and Real-World Experience
A standout feature of this project is its focus on practical training. The program has hands-on training embedded throughout with practical skills sessions held in Akadia’s simulated practice room. Once students are ready for placement, partnerships with trusted local providers ensure students gain hands-on experience in professional settings. Each placement is carefully matched to the student’s strengths and interests, with ongoing trainer support to address challenges and enhance learning outcomes.

Akadia Training’s track record speaks volumes. Transforming Lives and Strengthening Communities
The “Set for Success” project is more than a course; it’s a catalyst for change. By equipping students with the skills to succeed in the care sector, we’re addressing workforce shortages while empowering individuals to achieve their potential.
As demand for care workers continues to rise, initiatives like this are essential for building a stronger, more inclusive community.
