Course Overview

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the minimum requirement for workplace first aid compliance.

In this course, you will learn the skills and knowledge to be able to provide first aid response and life support, manage casualty(ies), the incident, and other first aiders, until qualified emergency help arrives at the scene of an incident.

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is trained in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

On successful completion of this course you will be issued a statement of attainment in:

  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

What is covered?

The course covers the following: 

  • Recognise and assess an emergency situation
  • Ensure safety for self, bystanders and casualty
  • Assess the casualty and recognise the need for first aid response
  • Seek assistance from emergency services
  • Apply appropriate first aid procedures
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with ARC guidelines
  • Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles
  • Display respectful behaviour towards casualty
  • Obtain consent from casualty where possible
  • Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
  • Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions
  • Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles
  • Communicate details of the incident
  • Accurately convey incident details to emergency services
  • Report details of incidents in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures
  • Complete applicable workplace or site documentation, including incident report form
  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of information in line with statutory or organisational policies
  • Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seek help when required
  • Contribute to a review of the first aid response as required
Entry Requirements

While there are no formal entry requirements for this course, participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations, such as 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

Workshop Duration

The course is offered over 1 ½ days face-to-face.  This is a fully instructor-led course and participants are required to attend both days.

Day One: 9am – 3pm

  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

Day Two: 8.30am – 12.30pm

  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Written and finalisation of assessment tasks to receive qualification/skill-set
Renewal of Certification

The Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines recommend the following:

 

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid valid for 36 months (3 years) from the date of course completion
  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support valid for 36 months (3 years) from the date of course completion
  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation valid for 12 months (1 year) from the date of course completion
Meet the Trainer

Heather Smith is an accredited First Aid and CPR  instructor with more than 35 years’ experience in various organisations including military service with the RAAF, Education Queensland and in small business as an Allied Health Professional.

Heather also holds a Bachelor of Education, a Diploma of Vocational Education and Training & Diploma of Training Design & Development. She always endeavours to provide a dynamic and interactive experience in her training courses.

Heather is a first aid officer at sporting events, car club events, and the Toowoomba Winter Shelter where she has applied her skills in many emergency situations. 

Assessment Requirements

All assessment requirements will be completed throughout the workshop.  There are no pre-reading or theory assessments to be completed outside of the course hours.  

Assessment components will include written assessment, practical activities and observations in a simulated environment.
